PESHAWAR In the opening match of men squash event, Qazi Rahim defeated Usman here on Thursday in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games being held at PAF Hashim Khan Squash Complex. With a perfect start, Qazi Rahim, a promising youngster from militancy-hit Swat district won against Usman of Lakki Marwat. Both the players performed well however, Qazi Rahim dominated the opening match and won the first set by 11-7. Usman responded good enough and won the second set by 9-11 as well as winning the third set by taking the lead, the score was 6-11. Qazi Rahim came back strongly and won two consecutive sets by 12-10 and 11-8 and won the opening match. PML (Q) leader Intikhab Chamkani was the chief guest at the opening ceremony. Besides others, former world champion Qamar Zaman, excited spectators and players were also present. In his speech, Qamar Zaman said that each of the regions fielded six players each in the tournament and among them a team would be finalised on best performance for the forthcoming 31st National Games. The chief guest Intikhab Chamkani stressed the need for healthy sports activities and assured full support to the organisers. Both male and female squash events would conclude on November 13. Likewise, Peshawar and Bannu qualified for final after recording victories against their respective rivals Mardan and Swat in the Kabaddi of the ongoing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Games here at Qayyum Sports Complex. In their matches, Peshawar secured a close victory against Mardan by 53-48 while Bannu edged past Swat by 54-47. The teams Malakand and Dera Ismail Khan did not turn up despite their confirmation for the event.
