LAHORE - The office-bearers of the Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA), led by its President Prof Dr Mehar Muhammad Saeed Akhtar, would stage a protest demonstration outside the Lahore Press Club at 12:30pm on Friday (today). In a press statement, PUASA General Secretary Prof Javed Sami has stated that this protest is as an expression of solidarity with the academic staff of all government and private universities in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa province who have gone on strike to protest against the kidnapping of Dr Ajmal Khan, Vice Chancellor of Islamia College University Peshawar, by Taliban. Prof Javed Sami demanded of the government to undertake concrete measures for the earliest possible safe release of Dr Ajmal. He said the van carrying the office-bearers of PUASA would leave for the Lahore Press Club from the Institute of Education and Research New Campus at 11:45am on November 12. Meanwhile, Prof Javed Sami has vehemently condemned the alleged misbehavior of senior clerk Munir Ahmad Awan with the Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Akhtar and Additional Registrar Prof Dr Aurangzeb Alamgir within the varsity premises. He said PUASA would not tolerate such objectionable behavior with the senior faculty members in future. PU VC to inaugurate one-day workshop Punjab University Research Office is organising on-day workshop today at 9:30 AM at the Institute of Quality & Technology Management entitled Research Management. PU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran will inaugurate the workshop. Prof Dr Amir Ijaz, Director Research, will explain objectives of research office along with the latest status of research carried out by different faculties of varsity as well as future planning of the research office. Resource persons Prof Dr Muhammad Nawaz Chaudhry, Prof Dr Zafar Iqbal Jadoon, Dr Shakil Ahmed, Dr Muhammad Usman Awan will talk about how to carry out research pursuits and finding different sources of funding for research projects. PUSIL to organise seminar tomorrow The Punjab University Society of International Law (PUSIL) will organise a seminar on United Nations and International Law tomorrow (Saturday) at 10:00am in the auditorium of Dr Pervaiz Hassan Environmental Law Center of Law College. The Ambassador of Finland Osmo Lipponen will be the chief guest on the occasion. PU awards 3 PhD degrees Punjab University has awarded PhD degrees to Syeda Nayab Batool Rizvi in the subject of Chemistry after approval of her research thesis entitled Prevalence of Some Trace & Toxic Minerals, Homocysteine, C-Reactive Protein and Lipid Profile in Cardiovascular Patients, Saima Anwar in the subject of Molecular Biology after approval of her research thesis entitled Positional Cloning of DFNB48 and DFNB73 Loci and Muhammad Ayub in the subject of Punjabi after approval of his thesis entitled The Tradition of Manqbat and Madah-Critical Study. They have completed their theses under the supervision of Prof Dr Saeed Ahmad Nagra, Director PU Institute of Chemistry, Prof Dr S Riazuddin of PU Centre of Excellence in Molecular Biology and Dr Nabeela Rehman Associate Professor PU Department of Urdu, respectively.
