ARACHI - Civic authorities have made special arrangements to facilitate the Muharram processions and majalis on 9th and 10th of Muharram.

As part of these arrangements, Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has finished the patch work on dilapidated roads through which Muharram processions are to pass, especially on those roads through which the main procession is to pass.

The Corporation has also cleaned the procession routes and the surroundings of imambargahs and Majalis venues.

The Anti-Encroachment Cell of KMC has also removed all sorts of encroachments, including iron counters, sugarcane juice machines, push carts and trolleys from the main road and pavements along the main procession route.

Encroachments have been removed from MA Jinnah Road, Saddar near Regal Chowk, Preedy Street and the areas surrounding Husainia Iranian Imam Bargah.

KMC and District Municipal Authorities have claimed that the streetlights have been repaired and inspection of CCTV cameras has also been completed.

They further said that surveillance of the processions continued from command and control room via CCTV cameras.

Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) spokesperson has said that all precautionary measures have been taken to facilitate the mourners: in processions and gatherings.

The spokesperson further said that on the directives of minister for local government, all damaged sewerage lines had been repaired along processions’ routes while complaints about overflow of these lines have also been addressed.

The spokesperson added that in order to review the arrangements, KW&SB Managing Director (MD) went round various areas of the city, including Numaish interchange, various points on MA Jinnah Road, Liaquatabad, Ancholi, Rizvia Society and others.

“The MD directed the concerned officials to ensure the availability of drinking water for participants of the main procession on 9th and 10th Muharram,” he added. On the other side, K-Electric has also announced to provide uninterrupted power supply on 9th and 10th of Muharram to facilitate the processions and majalis.

As per KE spokesperson’s statement, the power utility has arranged stand-by generators, which have been strategically placed at major locations in case there is an interruption in power supply. “We do not want our consumers to mistake any power outage for loadshedding. KE teams are on a standby and are equipped with means to overcome any localised fault,” the spokesperson reiterated.
