BAHAWALNAGAR

The ‘blue-eyed boys’ of sitting PML-N MNA roughed up policemen, torn off their uniforms and threatened them with dire consequences, after they attempted to stop them at a picket.

The Maroot Police, however, booked and arrested the accused despite huge ‘political pressure.’

On the other hand, MNA Alam Dad Laleka spared no effort to save his ‘unruly men.’

According to FIR No 72/16 registered by the Maroot Police, a police team headed by ASI Arshad along with constables Naveed Asif, Akmal Hussain and driver Haq Nawaz were on routine patrol in Chak 308/HR. In the meanwhile, a car bearing registration (IEE-8108) appeared from the south side of the link road. On suspicion, the police patrol intercepted the car, carrying five persons identified as Imran, Usman, Basharat, Ahsan Khan and Manzoor Ahmad.

As they policemen reached near, the car riders flared up and started manhandling the cops. They tortured driver Haq Nawaz and torn off his uniform, while they also opened fire on ASI Arshad. The accused managed to escape on the arrival of more police personnel, threatening the cops with dire consequences. Later, the police registered a case against the five accused under Sections 353, 324,186, 506, 148, 149, 13/20/65.

Later, the police arrested the accused which provoked PML-N MNA Alam Dad Laleka.

However, the lawmaker instead of supporting the ‘rule of law,’ approached Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif against the local police over the arrest of his men. The Punjab CM, however, ordered a probe into the incident and constituted a team comprising Additional IG (Operations) Capt (r) Arif Nawaz Khan and Special Home Secretary Dr Shoib. The team visited Bahawalnagar and conducted a probe into the incident. The team is likely to submit its report to the chief minister in couple of days.

Meanwhile, Bahawalnagar DPO Shariq Kamal Siddiqui declared that no one is above the law. He said that investigation into the incident is underway and the culprits would be taken to task as per law.
