The first Agriculture Research Centre in the South Punjab will start functioning soon upon completion of the building of the Islamia University’s Agriculture College which is nearing completion and will be ready for classes within a few months.

This was disclosed by IUB/GSCWU Vice-Chancellor Dr Muhammad Mukhtar while addressing the Agri Business Exhibition arranged by the students of the IUB Agriculture College here the other day.

He said that the establishment of the Agriculture Research Centre would help a lot in introduce new varieties of crops suitable to the geographical and climatic conditions of this region, adding that the centre would surely boost local agriculture sector as it would provide more chances of research for new varieties of crops and their immunity against virus.

On the occasion, University College’ of Agricultural scientist Dr Iqbal Bandesha informed that research activities at the University Agriculture College had been rapidly improved through the keen interest of IUB VC and work on different varieties of cotton, rice and plants was underway while two new BT and one non-BT cotton varieties had been successfully introduced in short period which were IUB-222, MM 58 and non BT IUB 11. He said that the IUB 222 was a most successful kind of cotton which could grow easily under hot temperature and less irrigation and fully suitable for the South Punjab condition and its marketing had been started which would be available while the MM 58 variety had been successfully passing through the experimental process.

A number of stalls of different kind of agriculture products including energy foods/drinks for old age people, juices, ketchup, cakes and other items were set up on the occasion which was appreciated by the visitors. hile the college students presented various business projects regarding agricultural products in a remarkable way. IUB Agriculture College Principal Dr Mouzam Jamil, Students Affairs Director Dr Tanvir Hussain and senior faculty member Dr Abdul Jabbar were also present on the occasion.
