BoK’s role in KP’s  development lauded

PESHAWAR (PR): The Bank of Khyber (BoK) is playing its vital role in the socio-economic development of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by extending its financial support for balanced economic growth.

This was stated by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Finance Minister Muzzaffar Said Advocate during his visit to BoK head office.  The finance minister was briefed by Shams-ul-Qayyum on BOK activities, achievements, various government initiatives and branch expansion programme.

The BOK group heads, divisional heads attended the presentation session. Muzzaffar Said mentioned that the BOK is having a trader friendly image which should be further enhanced by patronizing business community in the Province and their linkages across the country through BOK branches. He appreciated the tremendous growth shown by the Bank during 3 quarters of 2014 and advised the BOK Management to work more dedicatedly and devotedly to achieve not only annual targets but beyond the success. He was briefed on BOK Conventional & Raast Islamic Banking Group operational growth during the period under review and Provincial Govt initiatives schemes run the BOK the |minister appreciated the efforts and also advised that we should make the mechanism more easy and speedy as the common man should be more benefitted with Govt & BOK efforts for their well being.

Later on, Mr. Shams-ul-Qayyum thanked the visiting Minister Finance and assured him that BOK would act upon his guidance in the matters he pointed out during the presentation.

Buksh Foundation hosts workshop

LAHORE (PR): Buksh Foundation has collaborated with Asian Development Bank (ADB) under the banner of Punjab’s Off-grid Energy Access Initiative. A consultative workshop was recently held to generate and discuss ideas that could help in ensuring energy access in Punjab. Ensuring energy supply to the off grid areas is essential for overall economic development of the country and uplift of the general living standards.  The workshop also hosted energy consultants and stakeholders from the public and private sector, including; Khalid Ranjha - Additional Secretary for Energy in the Government of Punjab, Jiwan Acharya - Senior Climate Change Specialist at ADB, Salman Aizad from Punjab Power Development Board, Qamar Uddin - Program Director at Winrock International, Najam Shah - CEO of Quaid e Azam Solar Co.

Buksh Foundation is one of the most proactive not for profit organizations of Pakistan which is leading the industry and setting up industry trends for meeting the renewable energy demand in the off-grid rural areas, as well as partially electrified areas of the country, to bring about socio-economic changes.

The renewable and alternate energy consultants at the workshop, discussed and gave an overview of existing renewable energy solutions in off-grid areas of Nepal, Bangladesh, India and how the successful models in these countries be emulated in Pakistan.

Alfredo Baño - Energy Consultant at the Asian Development Bank in his presentation discussed the Punjab Energy Access Assessment, where he discussed the current energy access situation in the province and the surveys conducted by Mr. Bano. According to his findings, there is lack of basic infrastructure and grid extension for rural electrification is too costly. He also found that the Rural consumers pay higher costs per energy-unit, than urban ones. Rural un-electrified areas are an untapped market and private sector businesses can enter into this arena profitably while banking on these projects.

Fiza Farhan - CEO Buksh Foundation (BF) also discussed how BF has tapped the rural off-grid areas of Pakistan through impact investment and the various projects that have been implemented for providing rural electrification through “Lighting A Million Lives” (LaML) Project, which has created multifold benefits. She discussed the successful business models of BF and how ADB and BF can collaborate to bring innovation in the clean energy finance industry through the LaML Project and Micro Grids Projects for the underprivileged areas, with little or no access to electricity.

Buksh Foundation has laid the fundamental concepts in the alternate energy sector of the Country to bring about change in the lives of the underprivileged through catalyzing investments. Foundation has collaborated with private and public sector donors and partners, working with national and international governments and organizations, for scaling up projects and bringing attention towards the national issue - The lack of access to electricity and basic necessities of life.

Lafarge public welfare projects

KALLAR KAHAR (Staff Reporter): Lafarge Pakistan has launched a fully equipped Medical Unit and Parking Complex at Lafarge Pakistan’s operations in Kallar Kahar, district Chakwal.

Minister for Housing, Urban Development& Public Health Engineering C&W, Malik Tanveer Aslam Awan, Head of Economic Section, Embassy of France in Pakistan, Eric Noitakis, Management NRSP and Lafarge Pakistan and local administration of Chakwal were present on the occasion.

 The Medical Unit and Parking Complex are Lafarge’s contribution to better health & safety standards for the local community and surrounding villages of the district.

“The Medical Unit will go a long way in diagnosing and curing illnesses, creating awareness about hygiene, health, safety and addressing the needs of the current and future generations,” said Amr Reda, Country CEO, Lafarge Pakistan Cement, on the occasion.

The fully equipped medical unit houses separate wards for females and males with specialized medical assistance for gynae patients, in addition to providing emergency services.

“In his remarks, the minister congratulated the company for launching both the initiatives to serve the local community. “This will go a long way in contributing to the lives of the people of district Chakwal,” he said.

Eye hospital in Badin

KARACHI (PR): On December 11, the inauguration ceremony for “The project for the improvement of the eye hospital in the district Badin, Sindh” was held at the Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT) Free Secondary Eye Hospital in District Badin, with the presence of Akira Ouchi, the Consul-General of Japan in Karachi and Saquib Hameed, the Chairman of Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT).

The Government of Japan extended a grant of $104,534 to Layton Rahmatullah Benevolent Trust (LRBT) for building a new operation theatre to replace the old one which was built in 1987. The new operation theatre with surgical equipment will greatly improve the treatment and surgical facilities for the eye patients in Southern Sindh. More than 70,000 eye patients come to this hospital every year, and these upgraded eye-care facilities are expected to provide more than 10,000 patients every year with free access to eye surgical operations in a safe environment.

Speaking at the ceremony, Akira Ouchi, Consul General of Japan expressed his great pleasure in the realization of this project and sincerely hoped that this project would provide more people in Southern Sindh with free eye treatment with good quality. Ouchi mentioned that this project is a token of friendship from the people of Japan and that he wished that this support would further strengthen the friendly relationship between Japan and Pakistan.

Under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project (GGP) scheme, Japan has funded more than 300 projects in Pakistan since 1989, and Consulate-General of Japan in Karachi has so far implemented eleven projects since 2009.

K-Electric extends bills payment date

KARACHI (PR): K-Electric has extended the deadline for payments of electricity bills, which were due between 10th and 12th December (both days inclusive) to the new date of 15th December 2014.

All banks have been informed to accept the late payment without any penalty, said K-Electric’s spokesperson. He added that the reason for the extension was to facilitate the customers.  In-case any bank fails to accept the utility bill at a later date, consumers can register their complaints at email ID (dde@ke.com.pk).

MOL Group announces UPPP Competition winners

KARACHI (PR): Leading oil and gas company, MOL Group has announced the winners of UPPP Competition. Out of 972 international teams 10 teams participated at the live finals between 9th and 11th of December in Budapest, Hungary. Pakistani students with the team named ‘TeamMechanical” from NED University of Engineering and Technology secured second position in this worldwide competition. Polish students from AGH University of Science and Technology are ranked as the top team of the E&P competition.

MOL Group, a leading international oil and gas company, is looking for top geoscience and petrotechnical talents.

972 three-member teams applied for the talent acquisition program UPPP from 27 universities in 14 countries, ranging from the UK and Central Europe to the Middle East. Top ten teams from 6 countries made it to the live finals which took place from 9th until 11th of December in Budapest. During the live finals, teams had to solve challenging tasks related to the competition motto “Enter if you dare” in a base camp, which was organized exclusively for the top ten teams. In the Live Final event, the best 5 teams had to present their case to MOL Group E&P management. Based on the jury’s evaluation, top three teams won a total of 20,000 Euro and got the opportunity to join MOL Group and start their international career through the 18-month “UPPP Technical Placement Program”.  

„We congratulate the top three teams for winning this one of a kind competition. I would like to thank all participants for their endless efforts during the competition. The outstanding results and feedback from the participants are showing us once more that we are heading in the right direction to attract top talents for MOL Group’s challenging E&P assignments. The first prize goes to ONIONgas team (Jakub Pitera, Dawid Bydlosz, Tomasz Malachowski) from AGH University of Science and Technology, Poland. “The three—day UPPP experience was astonishing. Every part of the program from the accommodation to the Finals was organized to the highest international standard. This has been the biggest adventure of our lives. Final results were completely unexpected, and we think winning the competition is a great kick-start of our careers.” said the winning team.

Second place goes to TeamMechanical from NED University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan, and third place goes to OIL UP team from University of Miskolc, Hungary.
