LAHORE - M Tahir of Lahore Gymkhana, who is also a former Pakistan Open champion, was on top after the competition of first round of the Shezan International-sponsored 4th Quaid-e-Azam Open Golf Championship here at the Lahore Gymkhana gold course on Friday.

During the first round, Tahir, with the help of seven birdies, 10 regulation pars and one double bogie, came up with gross score of 67, five under par. Two other professional golf competitors behind him were Ashir Hanif (Gymkhana) and Nisar Hussain (PAF), as both came up with a similar score of 69, three under par.

Pakistan No 1 ranked player M Shabbir managed a round of 70, two under par and two odd mistakes in the round cost him a higher place on the leaderboard. Other competitors bracketed with Shabbir at a score of 70 were Shahid Hanif (Gymkhana), Talat Ijaz(Gymkhana), Waheed Baloch (Karachi) and Shahid Javed (Royal Palm). Placed at 71 were Matloob Ahmed (Garrison), Jafal Hussain (Gymkhana), M Akram (Gymkhana) and M Naqas (Islamabad) while at 72 were Imdad Hussain, Safdar Khan, Ansar Mehmood, M Asif and Hamza Amin.

In the race for honors in amateur section, Ghazanfar Mehmood led the race with an opening round of gross 72. Others in line were Taimoor Khan and Usman Ali at the same score 74. Naeem Khan and Mohsen Zafar were placed at a score of 75. The tee off today (Saturday) will be at 7am.
