LAHORE  - Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera has approved a comprehensive security plan to maintain peace and harmony on the occasion of Chehlum of Imam Hussain (RA) to be observed on Saturday (today).

A police spokesperson said that at least 50,084 policemen would be deployed across the Punjab province to provide security cover to 1089 precessions, and 2564 Majalis. Similarly, hundreds of policemen are also employed around 129 flashing points in the province to ensure foolproof security on the occasion of Chelum of Imam Hussain (R.A).

According to the security plan, at least 1789 CCTV cameras are installed for consecutive monitoring of processions, important buildings, and other sensitive points.

Also, walkthrough gates are placed at the entry and exit points of the main precessions and Majalis whereas 5449 metal detectors would be used for physical search of the participants. According officials, at least 231 police officers, 530 inspectors, 1929 sub inspectors, 2972 assistant sub inspectors and more than 30,000 head constables and constables are deployed on security duties across the province. Similarly, at least 13,353 male volunteers and 4063 female volunteers are also assisting the law enforcing agencies on this occasion.

The police spokesperson further said that no less than 679 Peace Committees have already been activated at police station, Tehsil, and district level to maintain religious harmony on this occasion.

“In case of any untoward happening, at least 33 companies of Pakistan Army and 12 companies of Pakistan Rangers Punjab will also remain on standby to respond to the situation,” the police spokesperson said.

According to an official circular, all kinds of leaves for policemen and the operational and security staff had already been cancelled due to security duties. The provincial police are also directed to ensure strict monitoring of the anti-state elements involved in wall chalking, publication of hatred material, misuse of loudspeaker, and provoking sectarianism. On the directions of provincial police chief, the traffic police have also implemented a plan to ensure smooth flow of traffic in Lahore besides marking alternate routes for the motorists on the occasion of Chelum of Imam Hussain (RA).

Meanwhile, a Lahore police spokesman said that a special control room has been activated at the office of the DIG (Operations) to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of the processions and Majalis. At least 5000 policemen are deployed in different parts of the provincial metropolis to maintain law and order on the occasion of Chelum of Imam Hussain (RA), he added.
