ISLAMABAD - Accountability Court, Islamabad, Friday acquitted former President and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zadrdari in two corruption cases as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) failed to give any proof and produce any witness.

The court acquitted Asif Ali Zardari in two references of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) – ARY Gold and Ursus Tractors. Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir was hearing the cases filed by NAB against the PPP co-chairman. The counsel for the former president argued that the main accused in these references had already been acquitted, so a co-accused could not be tried and should be acquitted under the NAB Ordinance, 1999.

Now only two corruption references – SGS and Co-Techna – are pending against the PPP co-chairman in the accountability court of Islamabad. The hearing of these references will be held on December 17 and it is likely that the court will give its final verdict on that date. The court has already acquitted Zardari in the Polo Ground reference.

After the Supreme Court NRO illegal in 2009, NAB revived a number of corruption references, including the five in which Zardari was also allegedly involved. These references were: Cotecna, SGS, ARY Gold, Ursus tractors and polo ground cases.
