ISLAMABAD - The PEW on Tuesday lauded the National Tariff Commission (NTC) for protecting the local pharmaceutical industry from the onslaught of an influential Swiss multinational. It called for a review in the existing laws as Pakistani industry has been facing a multinational offensive aimed at maximising profits. Dr Murtaza Mughal, President PEW condemned Swiss multinational Hoffmann-La Roche for its involvement in dumping of Pegasys, a medicine used to cure hepatitis, in Pakistan.

He said that the action of the Swiss company was not only hurting local manufacturers but it also amounts to depriving 20 million hepatitis patients in Pakistan of affordable medicine.

He lauded the NTC for acting swiftly on the complaint of local industry and declared Roche accused of dumping after investigation. However imposition of anti-dumping duties would have dettered them and help NTC aviod criticism, he noted.
