Islamabad - In recognition of his services, President Mamnoon Hussain has conferred Civil Award (Sitara-i-Imtiaz) on reputed bureaucrat Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema. In the middle of 2012, the department of Passport & Immigration was in such a dismal state that it was unable to issue new passports to passport seekers.

The situation caused inconvenience to the thousands of people. Eight million applications were pending till the start of 2013. To resolve what has become a crisis, then government appointed Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema as head of the department of Passport & Immigration. Cheema purged the department of corrupt elements and motivated the employees who by working day and night issued millions of passports and cleared the back log in just three months. Upon the recommendation of Civil Award Committee, the President conferred Civil Award on Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema, said a press release issued here Thursday.

Cheema has always enjoyed the repute of introducing positive changes and optimal outputs of the organisations. In 2008-09 Gujranwala was ruled by dangerous organised gangs of robbers and kidnappers. He eliminated all those gangs and made Gujranwala a peaceful city.
