KARACHI In one of the biggest bank heists in Pakistan, a security guard and his accomplices allegedly looted a private bank in the jurisdiction of Methadar Police Station of Sadr Town and decamped with approximately Rs 311 million. The said branch is located at II Chundrigar road and is only a few steps away from the Central Police Office (CPO). The security guard Shahid Mehmood let in two of his accomplices into the bank on Saturday night after it was closed to public and they first tied up two other guards namely Emran and Zamir and spent the whole night cutting through the vaults and collecting booty, police said. CCPO Karachi Wasim Ahmed said, We have arrested two people in connection with the robbery and are interrogating them and we have also cancelled the licence of the security agency, the personnel of which were posted at the bank. He said initial investigation showed security companies had deposited about Rs 300 million of foreign currency that has been looted while the exact looted amount remained unclear so far. He said the police had obtained the CCTV footage and the forensic department has taken the fingerprints. We are facing many troubles in finding out the footage of the culprits due to the poor result of CCTV cameras installed in the bank, said the CCPO and added that two investigation teams have formed to probe the case. South Zone DIG Ghulam Nabi Memon is leading one team and SIU Chief SSP Raja Omer Khattab is leading the other team. CCPO Waseem Ahmed himself is heading the inquiry in this case. The CCPO further said that during initial course of investigation, Emran, one of the two security guards who according to them were tied with the rope by Shahid and his accomplices has confessed that after the robbers left the bank, he found some forty thousand euros which he gave to his friend namely Syed Aqeel Abbas, a dismissed ASI. Syed Aqeel has also been taken into the custody for questioning. The swift operation took around two hours, said DSP Israr Awan of the CID on the crime scene. They had come to the bank with the gas cutters and other equipment. The culprits had broken only one of the nine lockers placed there. The locker, they broke had foreign currency including euros, dollars and pounds. They also tried to unlock second locker having Pakistani currency but fled away without completing their operation. However, use of gas cutter burnt local currency as well, he added. The police have detained the two security guards Emran and Zamir and Emrans friend Syed Aqeel Abbas who is a dismissed Assistant Sub-Inspector and a resident of Preedy Police Lines and started questioning with them. Police said that The NIC of the security guard Shahid involved in the robbery has been confiscated and his photograph has been provided to the media as well. CCTV footage was unclear because the culprits might have been cutting off the cables of cameras. It is pertinent to mention here police high-ups including CCPO Wasim Ahmed, South Zone Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ghulam Nabi Memon, Sadr Town SP Abdullah Sheikh, Crime Investigation Department (CID) SSP Fayyaz Khan, Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Chief Raja Omer Khattab and other officials immediately reached the site. Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Mirza has cancelled the licence of the security company namely Security and Protection Services (SPS) located at Pechs Colony. Police have announced a reward of Rs2 million for information leading to the capture of the guard.
