LAHORE - The bigwigs of the Police Department have sealed their offices by building fortifications for their own protection from the onslaught of anti-social elements instead of waking up to the call of the government to ensure security of the masses in possible disturbance during the holy month of Moharram-ul-Haram. Major police offices including the CCPO office at Shaarey Fatima Jinnah, SSP Operation office in the vicinity of District Courts, SSP Investigation office and almost all the offices of SPs situated in Cantt, Iqbal Town, Sadar, Civil Lines and Model Town areas have been completely wrapped by erecting huge blockades, placing sand bag fences, putting protective walls, and barricades besides deputing a large number of police personnel outside their offices. Police are on high alert at their top bosses offices than at sensitive and vulnerable public places like mosques and Imambargahs as Moharram-ul-Haram is nearing. It appears that the police are frightened by the sabotage acts. They have virtually sealed their offices in the name of security threats. This very situation has put a big question mark on police performance. Police sources on Sunday said that more than 200 potential trouble spots in the provincial metropolis had been pointed out as sensitive points. They said that it was the prime obligation of the police to deploy police personnel at these points immediately. A religious scholar seeking anonymity on Sunday revealed that all the entry and exit points of the places of majalis were still without police personnel. He also said that not a single rooftop was established, as was announced by the police high-ups. All the routes of Zuljinnah procession, Imambargahs are without security arrangements, he said and added that a top cop had announced that more than 12,000 police jawans would provide security cover to 4,000 majalis and 640 processions, while armed personnel would also be deputed at different religious programs to be held on daily basis in Moharram. He further said that these police personnel should be deployed immediately so that the officers should be familiar to the circumstances of majalis and imambargahs. According to the CCPO, in order to maintain a peaceful atmosphere during Moharram-ul-Harram, a strict security plan had been chalked out after the consultation with leaders belonging to various schools of thought, whereas crises management centres had also been established in the City, which would function around the clock, while a special control room would also be set up in the office of CCPO for coordination between various agencies. He further said that the City Police force would provide security cover to 297 Imambargahas and 787 mosques falling on the routes of the procession. Rathore said that code of conduct would be strictly implemented during Moharram-ul-Harram and 1068 members of District Peace Committee would remain present on the routes of the procession and majalis especially at sensitive places. He said that 134 mobile squad, 85 motorbikes, 75 cars, 11 cars of Elite Force would also be deployed on this occasion.
