LAHORE - Railways Minister Khwaja Saad Rafique has announced that the passengers travelling from Lahore to Karachi would enjoy 50 per cent discount in fare on Eid.

“The passengers travelling from Lahore to Karachi on July 14, 15 and 16 will be given 50 per cent concession in fare,” he said while addressing a press conference at Railways Headquarters here Monday.

The PR has already announced 30 per cent reduction in fare for the passengers travelling on Eid and next day. The minister’s press conference was in the backdrop of electronic media criticism that Eid special trains failed to attract passengers especially towards down destinations.

“The one-directional trend of traffic is usual across the world on special occasions. Planes come back empty from Saudi Arabia during Haj operation. People travel from the port city towards other destinations before Eid and trend reverses after Eid,” he explained and requested the media not to report things without proper information. He said that Pakistan Railways needed support of the media at a time when it was coming back on track after facing deficit for years. “Pakistan Railways will soon regain its lost glory. We are all working hard for it,” he vowed.

To a query, the minister replied that JIT report on the Gujranwala train incident would hopefully be released before Eid. But, he added, the department could not force the investigators to release it on any particular day.

Almost a week earlier, at least 19 people including army officers lost their lives in the incident near Gujranwala. The Pak Army officials and Railways are investigating the causes of incident.

“Let them (investigators) do their job with quite satisfaction. We should not make rumours before the report is released,” he appealed.
