LAHORE Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, a former federal minister who now heads Awami Muslim League, says political situation in the country is very critical and democratic system cannot survive any more. Talking to Nawa-i-Waqt on Monday, he said the PPP was working on the US agenda and Mian Nawaz Sharif was out to humiliate the army. Sheikh, who was once as close to Mian Nawaz Sharif as he subsequently got to Gen Musharraf, was of the view that the PM L-N would lose some more seats in the next elections. He said as a result of hatred against both the major parties a new bloc would come into being. The AML chief said the situation would not have been as bad as it is at present if the various factions of the PML had got united. He alleged that Mr Sharifs stubbornness had brought the country to the verge of destruction. In his opinion the time for the unification of PML factions was over now. Expressing disappointment over the performance of the democratic system, the leader from Rawalpindi said it had not given the people anything. Now, he said, democratic system had gone to what he called showbiz people. About the PML-Qs alliance with the PPP, the former minister said the Chaudhrys had taken a hasty step. He said he personally thought that the Chaudhry would adopt a course of action which was in the interest of the PMLs. In response to a question, Sheikh Rashid said the PPP wanted to drag the system at least till March next year, when the Senate elections are due on 50 per cent seats. Answering another question, he warned that if the army was weakened servants would take over Raiwind palaces. He said the army had no role to play in politics now, but at the same time it should not be pushed to the wall. In case it got demoralized, it would have adverse consequences on the security of the country. Responding to a question, Sheikh Rashid said the situation had established that there was no difference between military and civilian dictatorship. Mian Nawaz Sharif had not held party elections for the past two years, he said. He said the US interference into Pakistans affairs was about to go up to dangerous level. According to him, some politicians of the country were in contact with the US through the Indian ambassador. Sheikh Rashid also called on Nawa-i-Waqt Editor-in-Chief Majid Nizami and exchanged views with him on the prevailing political situation.
