ISLAMABAD Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has arrested a proclaimed offender from Faisalabad Railway Station in 265 missing containers scam. FBR Directorate General Intelligence and Investigation arrested Jamal Durrani after it received information that the man absconding for more than a year and a half was seen in Faisalabad. In July 2007,the FBR detected a mega scam of 265 missing containers. These containers were removed from Port Qasim, Karachi for upcountry dry ports under the garb of transhipment consignments but never reached at the destination ports. FBR Director General Intelligence and Investigationlodged 90 FIRs and arrested about 40 accused out of which 18 have been convicted so far. Main accused Jamal Durrani was the owner of a clearing agency M/S NJ International, which had managed fraudulent removal of containers from Port Qasim. During the investigations, it also transpired that the authority letter to the Port Qasim authorities had been issued in Jamal Durranis name for clearance of the containers. Moreover, the financial investigations revealed that he had received more than Rs10 million in his bank accounts from other fraudsters involved in this scam. He was declared a proclaimed offender in March 2010 as he absconded after obtaining bail on medical grounds. Since then the authorities were trying to catch him. FBR DG Intelligence and Investigation has now obtained a 5-day remand of Jamal.
