ISLAMABAD - As the tug of war between PML-N and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam over the appointment of Leader of the Opposition in the Senate has intensified, PML-N Senator Ishaq Dar has sought complete record from the Senate Secretariat that prompted the Senate chairman to recognise the JUI-Fs candidate for this slot. Ishaq Dar, also the contender for the slot of leader of the opposition, has sought the record from the Senate secretary in a letter addressed to the Senate Secretariat under the head of recognition of the leader of opposition, Senate of Pakistan. A copy of the letter available with TheNation says that with reference to the order dated June 6, 2011, of the Senate chairman on the appointment of the leader of opposition, a copy of the application/letter together with annexures moved by or on behalf of Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, for nominating him as the leader of the opposition on the basis of the support of 13 senators be provided to the undersigned immediately. Ishaq Dar has also sought a copy of the application moved by 24 senators proposing to nominate him as leader of the opposition, together with annexures filed therewith. He has demanded a copy of the list of senators issued by the Senate Secretariat on March 12, 2009, and May 3, 2011, together with any revised lists issued between March 12, 2009, and May 3, 2011. The letter seeks copies of all letters written by the senators of PML-Q showing their preference to sit on the opposition benches. Dar has also demanded to supply him a copy of letter of Senator Ch Shujaat Hussain to the Senate chairman on the subject, requesting to consider support of some 30 treasury members for nomination of Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as leader of the opposition and copies of any subsequent correspondence on the subject. He has sought a copy of letter of five senators from Fata stating that they were independent members in the Senate. He also demanded copies of all letters written by senators from Fata to the chairman/deputy chairman/Senate Secretariat for allocation of seats, for seats allocation on treasury or opposition benches and the nomination of their parliamentary leader for the period from March 12, 2009, till June 7, 2011. Seeking a brief on the procedure adopted by the Senate chairman for the subject nomination, Ishaq Dar said that a copy of application/letter (together with annexures and signatures copies of 19 senators) on the basis of which the chairman recognised Senator Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri as the leader of the majority of the members in opposition be provided to him.
