LAHORE - Major political parties of Punjab have put their activities in normal mode after getting extension in the local government elections schedule.

Following the Supreme Court directions, the Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday proposed January 30 as the fresh date for holding the local government elections in Punjab.

Mainstream political parties including the PTI and PML-Q that had accelerated their election campaigns according to the old schedule, have now demanded reasonable time for completing their preparations.

The PML-N, the ruling party of the province, started its election campaign a little later; however it has also demanded extension in the schedule. The PPP didn’t start any serious campaign so far, and also asked for delay in the local polls.

Leaders of the political parties praised the decision in connection with extension in the election schedule, and directed their local leaderships to go easy for finalising their candidates.

However, PTI Punjab president, Ejaz Chaudhry stressed upon the authorities concerned for definitely holding the local elections on January 30. He demanded that local elections should be held under the supervision of the judiciary instead of district administration to ensure transparency. He further demanded that election results should be announced on the same evening.
