ISLAMABAD (APP) - Federal Minister for Textile Industry, Rana Muhammad Farooq Saeed Khan has said that his ministry has prepared a list of 15 items, which, if included in the duty free tariff list proposed by the EU, would increase exports up to one billion euros. Whereas the current concessionary list would add an additional 100 million euros only as 75 items included in the proposed list account for less than one third of Pakistans exports. The minister presided over a meeting regarding preferential market access in EU to certain textile products. The meeting was attended by heads and representatives from various trade associations. Secretary Textile Industry Waqar Masood briefed about the recent EU tariff concessions on textile items, said a statement issued here on Wednesday. The minister termed the trade concessions a historic breakthrough in trade diplomacy, yet, he pointed out that the overall impact of these proposed duty suspensions would not be of much benefit to the value added textile sector as the thrust of the concessions is mainly focused on low value products like gloves, mittens, socks etc. whereas key products like bed-linen, garments etc were left out. The minister emphasized the concessions should be liberal and it should include the value added textile products if EU intends to help Pakistan economy in moving upwards in the wake of the recent devastating floods. He said that soon he would be writing a letter to Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, requesting him to forward this proposal to EU for consideration through diplomatic channels.
