LAHORE -Criticizing the appointment of Justice (r) Deedar Shah as Chairman the National Accountability Bureau, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal said that the step tantamount to giving the accused a right to have the investigation officer of his choice, which is impermissible under any law in the world. In a statement issued here on Wednesday, he said the appointment was still more objectionable as both the president and the law minister were involved in cases under investigation with the NAB. The PML-N leader said the prime minister had already clarified that he had played no role in the appointment of the NAB chief. This, he said, meant that not only the opposition leader in the National Assembly had been ignored but also the prime minister. He said nowhere in Pakistan had any accused got the right to have the investigation officer of his choice, which has been given to the president. If this were accepted as a right of the accused, he said, no accused would ever be convicted by any court of law. Ahsan Iqbal said since all people were equal in the eye of the Constitution, will a similar right be given to the other accused, too? Such steps, he alleged, were creating an impression in the world that people occupying higher positions in Pakistan had got the license to commit corruption with impunity. He said the president should prove his innocence before courts of law.
