OUR STAFF REPORTER LAHORE A Division Bench of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday declared invalid the earlier appointment of Rana Zahid Mahmood on contractual basis as Director General of the National Accountability Bureau. The Bench of Justice Shiekh Ahmad Farooq and Justice Muhammad Qasim gave the said verdict after getting information from the representative of the federal government that no extension in the contractual service of Rana Zahid had been made after April 21 last. The petition was filed by Sohail Nisar and Shah Faisal on which the court had earlier restrained Rana Zahid from functioning on May 26 last. The petitioners took the plea that extension in the service period of the respondent DG under the NAB Ordinance could come about only through the NAB Chairman who had not been in the office over the last many months. As such any extension in the service period of Rana was against the law and the constitution and liable to be struck down. LHC issues notice to PA Speaker: Justice Sheikh Azmat Saeed of the Lahore High Court on Tuesday issued notice to the Punjab Assembly Speaker to seek his reply to the petition filed by one Adeeba Ashraf praying for a direction to the respondent to declare her as MPA instead of former MPA Shumaila Rana. The court on the petition of Adeeeba required the PA Speaker to do the needful by October 12 next. The petitioner prays to the court to declare her elected on the seat fell vacant after resignation of Shumaila as MPA following a credit card scandal in 2009 against her (Shumaila). The petitioner contends in order of candidature she merits appointment to the vacant seat as a matter of giving representation to the people, which is their constitution right. She prayed that a direction may be issued to the Speaker for sending recommendation to the Election Commission to name her elected Member Punjab Assembly on the vacant seat. Justice Azmat Saeed also referred the matter to the Bench of Justice Umar Ata Bandial where the petition earlier moved by Shumaila to seek restoration of her membership in the Assembly as PML (N) candidate, is pending. Shumaila through her petition contended that she was forced to tender resignation by the party stalwarts who gave threats and got her signatures on the papers which later on they tendered to the Speaker as her resignation. Demolition of post office stayed: Justice Umar Ata Bandial of the Lahore High Court Tuesday stayed demolition of the historic post office in Mochi Gate, Walled City, and issued notice to the Post Master General for October 17 to seek a reply to the petition filed by residents of Mochi Gate. Through the counsel the petitioners informed the court that authorities had ordered to pull down the 100-year-old post office in Mochi Gate giving no regard to the fact, it was meeting an essential need of the locals and the general public and was a historic site which needed to be preserved and kept operational. The counsel said in any other country, such a historic building would have been admired much and furnished to a taste after it has served the public for such long period of time. But here the authorities have decided to raze it to the ground in a whimsical and capricious manner paying no regard to sentimental attachment people have with this site and how much it is useful for them. The counsel prayed for an interim order against the proposed demolition of the post office which the court allowed after hearing the case at the preliminary stage and issued notice to the Post Master General for October 17 next.
