LAHORE: PML-Q and PPP implementing the seat adjustment formula agreed between the leaderships of the two parties in the recent past, would field a joint candidate in the by-polls of PP-220, (Sahiwal-I) to be held on October 13. The decision in principle to launch a joint candidate from PP-220, district Sahiwal came after a meeting between PPP Punjab president, Imtiaz Safdar Warraich, Sami Ullah Khan, general secretary and PML-Q senior leader, Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi at State Guest House, the camp office of PML-Q on Tuesday. Meanwhile, PML-Q sources privy to the developments regarding Sahiwals constituency told The Nation that the candidate for the seat would be of PML-Q. They further informed that partys top leadership expected to finalize a candidate for PP-220 in a party meeting to be held on September 18. It may be noted here that the seat fell vacant after Pir Walayat Shah Khagga, former PML-Q MPA, who later joined the forward bloc was disqualified by the Lahore High Courts Election Tribunal for having fake degree. Insiders in PML-N told this scribe that Pir Walayat Shah Khagga could be the candidate of their party in PP-220, while Khagga would formally resign from the PML-Q before his announcement as the candidate of PML-N from PP-220. They also informed that senior provincial leadership of PML-N would visit the constituency and announce some development programmes to grab maximum support in favour of their contender. However, a PML-N team would visit the said constituency to get the sense of the local population for finalizing their contender. Local leaders were of the view that any wrong move on part of the PML-N regarding finalizing a candidate for PP-220 could jeopardize their chances of win in this constituency. On the contrary, chances of PML-Q securing the seat could become stronger if the PPP local leaders would really support the PML-Q contender. As, the veteran local leaders of PP-220 have claimed that genuine Muslim League workers and PPP activists never accepted each other, which could be damaging for the PML-Q. It has been learnt that Hamza Shahbaz and Khawaja Saad Rafique would be the key team leaders of PML-Ns campaign in PP-220 by-polls along with the local party leadership. Khagga won the seat by bagging 24,880 votes on PML-Q ticket in 2008 general elections against Nazar Muhammad Fatyana of PML-N who secured 16,522 votes. Moreover, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already announced to hold by-election for the provincial constituency PP-120 (Sahiwal-I) on October 13. The candidates could file nomination papers from Sep 14 to 15. The scrutiny of nomination papers would be conducted on September 19 and 20. While, September 22 has been fixed as the last date for filing appeals against the decision of the Returning Officer. The last date for deciding appeals is September 27, while the candidates can withdraw their candidature till September 28. The final list of the candidates would be issued on September 29.
