Islamabad - Former Prime Minister (PM) Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar was finally discharged from Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and shifted back to Adiala jail after being admitted in the hospital for four days, said officials.

Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar was rushed to PIMS hospital on August 9 after he suffered a post-surgical complication induced by serious gastrointestinal infection due to intake of jail food.  The five member medical board discharged the Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar from the private ward of PIMS cardiac center declaring his health satisfactory, sources said.

Sources said that the medical board, in writing has informed the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) and PIMS administration that Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar has recovered from the ailment and could be shifted to jail again.  Sources said that PIMS administration also informed the jail administration regarding medical fitness and recovery of the convicted Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar.

A medical official informed The Nation that the medical board had found all medical reports of Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar normal and no surgery has been recommended. However, the board kept him under observation because of his unstable diabetic level and stomach pain.

Executive Director (ED) PIMS Dr. Raja Amjad Mehmood said that Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar has been discharged from the hospital after medical board recommended his health situation as normal.

PIMS spokesperson Dr. Waseem Khawaja also responded ‘yes’ when was approached regarding confirmation of discharging of that Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar from the hospital.

Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar was diagnosed with high level of body fats in his medical reports after he was shifted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in emergency. PIMS administration had constituted five members board for the medical examination of Muhammad Safdar. The board is headed by Prof. Tanveer Khaliq, head of General Surgery, Dr. Atif Inam Shami (Surgery), Dr. Mashood (Gastroenterology) Dr. Fibha Syed (General Medicine) and Dr. Mujahid Raza from department of radiology.

The medical reports received after the emergency treatment given to Muhammad Safdar at private ward of PIMS cardiac center suggested that his liver and kidneys were functioning normally, and his diabetes was also controlled. But, triglycerides level (develops in body when one consumes more fats then he burns) were found at a highly increased level. The normal range for Triglycerides is 100-150 while in Muhammad Safdar’s report it was found at level 335.

Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar has been sentenced to one year by accountability court and is imprisoned at Adiala jail along with former PM Nawaz Sharif and his wife Maryam Nawaz.
