Wapda, SSGC qualify for 1000m sprint

LAHORE - Wapda and SSGC qualified for the 1000 meters team sprint event of the PCF 62nd National Men’s (Senior/Junior) Cycling Championships here on Saturday. As many as nine affiliated teams of Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) have been taking part in the championship. The evening session was inaugurated by Col Syed Saddaf Akram of Pakistan Army Sports Board. In the 36.8km road individual time trial (senior), SSGC clinched the first position while second went to SSGC and third to Wapda. In the 9.2km road team trial (junior), Balochistan emerged as victories while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa claimed second spot and Punjab finished as third. In the 64.4km road team time trial (senior), first position was clinched by SSGC while Army secured second and Wapda earned the third position.–Staff Reporter

 Lochte cruises home in Charlotte meet

LOS ANGELES - Olympic champion Ryan Lochte cruised to victory in the 400-meter individual medley on Friday at the Arena Pro Swim Series. The 31-year-old American star never looked in danger as he surged home in 4min 16.92sec to delight the crowd at the Mecklenburg County Aquatic Center in Charlotte, South Carolina. "That win tonight hurt but on (the) bright side, it's Friday," Lochte quipped on Twitter shortly after his victory. Lochte finished two seconds clear of Tomas Peribonio, with Michael Weiss coming home in third. This week's meeting had suffered a blow after US swim star Michael Phelps withdrew from the competition following the birth of his son. However other Olympic gold medalists were in action on Friday including 100m butterfly champion and world record holder Dana Vollmer.–AFP

 Bolt still wants Man United job

GEORGE TOWN - World's fastest man Usain Bolt says he still dreams of playing for Manchester United -- as long as Louis Van Gaal is not the manager. Bolt, who owns the 100-meter world record at 9.58 seconds and the world 200m record of 19.19, spoke Friday on the eve of his opening race of the 2016 campaign in the Cayman Invitational. The Jamaican superstar has long been critical of Van Gaal's stewardship of Manchester United, saying he has not used players in the proper positions and that has led to disappointing performances by the English Premier League club. "I supported Manchester United for years," Bolt said. "I would still love to play for them, but if Louis Van Gaal is the coach, not so much," said Bolt, who predicted he will open his season by running the 100 in 9.91.–AFP

 Shabbir, Shahid emerge joint leaders

LAHORE - Shabbir Iqbal and Shahid Javed Khan emerged as the joint leaders of the Nabi Yousaf Memorial Professional Golf Challenge Cup being contested here at the Royal Palm Golf and Country Club golf course. On the third day of the event, Shahid had a round of 71, which gave him an aggregate score of 209, seven under par for three rounds while Shabbir came up with a third round score of 70 with a three-day aggregate score of 209. Both the leaders entered the final phase of this grand event same aggregate of 209. Afsar Ali of Karachi posted a 70 to occupy third place on 214 and would be a part of the final three ball flite on Sunday the final day along with Shahid and Shabbir. Sajjad Khan was at 216, M Imran at 217 along with Matloob Ahmed and M Tariq while Sunny Masih was at 218.–Staff Reporter

 Islamabad win 10-Rugby National opener

ISLAMABAD – Islamabad Whites got off to a flying start in the All-Pakistan 10-Rugby National Championship, after thrashing UVAS 27-0 in the first match here at Pakistan Sports Complex on Saturday. IRU secretary Salman Sheikh was the chief guest while PRU vice president Yahya Bhatti, media manager Wafa Armani Abbas, Islamabad Jinns skipper Sahir Aslam and a sizable crowd and families were present on the occasion. In the second match, Lahore Rugby Football Club humbled Desert Camels 42-5, Lahore Hawks routed Multan 28-0, Islamabad Blacks crushed Muzafargarah 27-0, while Farata and UVAS match ended in 0-0 draw. In the second pool matches, Desert Camels thumped KP 36-5, Multan beat Vihari 24-5, Muzaffargarh downed Lodhran 12-0, Islamabad Whites outclassed Fata 29-0, Lahore Hawks thrashed Vihari 12-0.–Staff Reporter
