ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has verified 658 degrees of the members of assemblies while authenticity of 370 is still to be ascertained. HEC Focal Person Dr Rahim Bux Channa told state-run news agency here on Sunday that out of the total verified degrees, 604 are genuine and 54 are invalid or fake while 18 cases are pending in courts. 370 cases of verification of degrees are being delayed due to non-submission of supporting documents including forms, matric and intermediate certificates by members of parliament and provincial assemblies, he added. He said at present there is no deadline given for degrees verification and the process will continue till degrees and required information is received from the universities. Channa said the Election Commission has written letters to Speakers to direct the members of assemblies to provide the information they have been asked for. The Election Commission asked the HEC to start the process of verification of degrees on the directions of Supreme Court of Pakistan. The Election Commission appointed a three-member committee which is hearing cases of members of assemb-lies so that they can prove genuineness of their gradua-tion degrees. The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to file cases against fake degree holders at the earliest.
