LAHORE - PML-Q Punjab President Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi Sunday claimed that the dissidents were thinking about joining the mother party again. He said these legislators knew that they were tarnishing their own image by staying away from the party on whose ticket they had been elected. Pervaiz was addressing the party workers convention at Okara, the third during the past few days after the two in Gujranwala and Sialkot. The PML-Q had won more than 80 seats of Punjab Assembly in the 2008 elections. However, around three-dozen of these MPAs formed a forward bloc on account of differences with the leadership. Although the party has been trying to win back their support, they have so remained aloof to the efforts. But it is the first time that the PML-Q leader has expressed optimism about their rejoining the party. Elahi strongly criticised the performance of Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, saying the PML-N government had failed to check the sugar prices, although Shahbaz himself owned some sugar mills. He said the price of the sweetener could be brought down to Rs 40 per kg if the CM stopped earning exorbitant profit on the produce, adding that Shahbaz must follow his advice to prove that he had any sympathy with the poor. He said the sugar price during his tenure was Rs24 per kg, which had now jumped to Rs124. Pervaiz claimed that he had spent Rs30 billion for the welfare projects in Okara, but the incumbent Punjab govt transferred Rs800 million funds of the districts local government to Jatti Umra. Criticising the Sasti Roti Scheme, he said the auditor general had acknowledged that there had been financial misappropriations in the stated scheme. Elahi maintained that he had left Rs76 billion in the provincial kitty and Rs22 billion in the head of local councils, while the people were now asking the chief minister about the empty coffers of the province. Instead, the provincial govt by getting Rs300 billion overdraft had made the province a beggar, he added. The PML-Q leader claimed that flood affectees as well as the victim families of the Data Darbar tragedy received no assistance, as there was no cash available for Watan Cards, while on the other hand, 14,000 cheques of the provincial government had also bounced. He also accused the PML-N govt of not taking steps for the welfare of the people.
