FAISALABAD - As many as 575 million, out of 925 million people facing malnutrition are living in Asia-Pacific region, said speakers at a seminar.

The seminar titled 'Nutrition and Health Awareness with a special focus on Calcium and Vitamin-D' was arranged by the Department of Home Economic, Institute of Home and Food Sciences, Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) here the other day.

The speakers said that the problem of malnutrition could be overcome by creating awareness among the masses about the nutrient values of food and chronic diseases caused by deficiencies of vitamins and calcium.

GCUF VC Dr Zakir Hussain stressed the need for educating people about eating habit keeping in view the nutrient values of different food.

He pointed out that lack of vitamin-D and calcium were not only responsible for bone diseases but also other ailments. Adequate vitamin-D intake may reduce risk for cancer, high blood pressure etc, he said.

He said that Pakistan was having 45 million malnourished people adding that Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Nigeria and Peru were among the top world's malnourished children countries.

He said that ever-increasing population, climate changes, frequent natural disasters, and other factors were aggravating the situation of food security and malnutrition in the region.  He urged the GCUF researchers to carry out more durable researches on the topic in a bid to sensitize the public about its proper use and ways to prevent from the different diseases.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Noreen Aziz Qureshi said that the Department of Home Economics was taking all-out steps to address the issue at large level. She said that the GCUF was committed to holding such seminars and workshops in order to fight the issue of malnutrition.

Registrar Muhammad Ayub, GCUF Dean Shahbaz Arif, Dean Dr Pervaiz Azeem, Dr Iftikhar Hussian Bukhari, Senior Advisor HR Shiekh Muhammad Akram, Director Admin Ch Muhammad Ashfaq, Dr Tahir Taunsavi, UAF Dean Dr Muhammad Ashfaq and other notables were also present on the occasion.
