DE-SILTING OF NULLAH: The district administration has carried out the de-silting and re-aligning of the Nullah Bhed which passes through the commercial, industrial and residential areas of Sialkot city.

The Nullah Bhed was lying choked at various congested parts of Sialkot city as the people, local hospitals, tanneries and others have dumped their effluent there. Some of the local tanners, private schools’ owners and other influential people have also occupied the land along the banks of this Nullah by establishing encroachments.

In September 2014, the Nullah Bhed and Nullah Aik had flooded the entire Sialkot city. These nullahs have not yet been de-silted since long. Due to this height of negligence, Sialkot city was flooded and the citizens faced bitter experiences of disasters.

The district administration has ordered probe against the TMA officials for their alleged negligence in the issue, due to which the Sialkot city faced this year’s flash floods caused by both nullahs Bhed and Aik.

The DCO said that the Sialkot TMA had claimed to remove all the blockages from the Nullah Bhed, but no blockage was yet removed and it is still choked, encroached by influential people.

Local tanneries and local private hospitals and clinics were continuously dumping their effluent in this Nullah. The DCO said that no government department had owned the responsibility to remove encroachments.

Now, the district administration was chalking out a multi-phased plan to remove all the blockages, hurdles and encroachments from Nullah Bhed by giving it under the control of Sialkot TMA, he said. He added that all the necessary legal action was also being taken against the encroachers.

He said that the government and TMA would generate necessary funds for this purpose of re-aligning, widening and deepening of Nullah Bhed in a bid to avert the recurring flood threats and disasters in Sialkot city in future.

He said that a time period of one week had been given to all the departments concerned to chalk out a plan to purge Nullah Bhed from encroachments, blockages and encroachers at every cost.
