KARACHI – Since its inception, the Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology (SSUET) has focussed on imparting research-based education and training to the youth, said its chancellor ZA Nizami on Sunday.

“With the very motive and objective Sir Syed University has contributed a lot to the field of research,” the chancellor said during a ceremony organised by SSUET in collaboration with Pakistan Intellectual Forum to award 5 gold medals to the academicians who had contributed to the development of research and education in the country.

The Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology, he maintained, provided a diverse, vibrant and stimulating environment for research and considers its graduate and postgraduate students as important components of its success.

Nizami said that the faculty members at the university were strongly encouraged to attend and participate in national and international conferences and also to publish their work in research journals.

The Sir Syed University of Engineering and Technology chancellor further said that the Aligarh Old Boys Association was equally committed to establish centers of learning and research in other parts of the country and with the very motive had offered to help for establishing a university at Pak Pattan Sharif.

“We had made a complete charter for the proposed university, but no further development took place in this regard while the association awaits for a continuation of the work,” he said.

Vice Chancellor of Karachi University, Dr Qaiser, said the universities do not survive without research and research could not be done without money.

“Unfortunately in our context least importance is given to the development of education and research,” he said.

“Research in our country is like putting money at one end and taking out money with profit from other end,” he commented.

Former federal minister Haji Hanif Tayyab and Registrar of Federal Urdu University, Dr. Qamar also spoke on the occasion.

The recipients of the medals included Prof Dr Hakim Aaqil who was awarded in recognition of his great work in IT Sector.

Second gold medal was given to Prof. Dr. Muhammad Qaiser, Vice-Chancellor of Karachi University and former VC of Federal Urdu University for his grand contribution to knowledge- based research.

Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chaudhry got the 3rd gold medal for his valuable services in research development.
