ISLAMABAD - Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar Friday chaired the meeting of the Committee on Energy Resource Rationalization here.

Secretary Water and Power Nargis Sethi in her presentation apprised the committee, formed by the Prime Minister for the power sector, of various issues being faced by the Ministry of Water and Power in collecting the amount receivable from various sectors. She also briefed the committee that the amount payable to different sectors had been reduced to Rs 244 billion which had earlier reached Rs 300 billion.

The minister appreciated the efforts and hard work done by the Secretary Water and Power and asked her to re-double the efforts to improve the situation of recoveries and also lowering the amount payable to different entities.

He said the government was on track in the case of paying subsidies to the power sector for the provision of cheap electricity to the common man but on the other hand “we also need to enhance the efficiency of our system by reducing line losses and stopping pilferage from the system.”

The minister approved the plan to reduce losses in the sector, as proposed by Special Sssistant to the Prime Minister Mussadik Malik and directed the Secretary Water and Power to extend full cooperation to Special Assistant for its implementation. The implementation of the proposal would be reviewed shortly by the committee.

He also directed the Secretary Water and Power to work on the Federal Adjuster account to reconcile with the provinces on the issue of recoveries as early as possible. The minister also directed that feeder wise monitoring should be made in order to reduce line losses, improving recoveries and stopping of theft of the system.

Rewards and incentives should be given to SDOs on improving performance in the said areas. As the first step, the work on monitoring performance of the feeders will be started from two Discos, one each from Punjab and Sindh province.

The next meeting of the committee will be held in the week in which the progress so far being made by the committee will be reviewed.

The meeting was attended by Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and senior officials of the ministries of Finance and Petroleum and Natural Resources.
