KARACHI - Pakistan's top star M Shabbir Iqbal got off to a superb start with opening round of 3-under-par 69 in Rs2million Faysal Bank 16th Sindh Open Golf Championship here at Arabian Sea Country Club (ASCC) on Friday. After playing a par-36 at the front nine with two birdies and three bogey, Shabbir was at his brilliant best, carding four birdies with 3-under 33 at the back nine to jump to top in the pack of 73-golfer. Shabbir of Islamabad Golf Club, gave a brilliant driving, chipping and putting to gain two-stroke lead over his closest rival M Safdar of Gujranwala. Veteran golfer Imdad Hussain of Lahore Gymkhana was close on Shabbir's heal after carding first round of one-under-par 71. Imdad made a brace of birdies on hole four and 14 and three bogeys to end the day with one-under. Safdar and Nisar Hussain both from Gujranwala and M Tariq of IGC were tied for the third spot after playing identical round of par-72. Safdar made five birdies also got a triple bogey on hole 15th. Asghar Ali of Lahore Gymkhana was first day leader in senior professionals with an aggregate of 2-under-par 70. M Ilyas second at par 72 and holder Ghani Khan and Akhtar Ali occupying joint third spot with a round of 1-over-par 73. Among the amateurs Ghazanfar Mahmood of Rawalpindi Golf Club emerged as the first round leader with an aggregate of one-over-par 73. Zuhaib Asif of DHA was placed second three strokes behind after carding 4-over-par 76 and further stroke behind was National Champion Zulfiqar Ali of Multan at 77. DHA's Wasim Rana was disqualified by the organizing committee despite playing round of 78 after reporting late for the event. –APP
