ISLAMABAD - Director General Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Waseem Ahmed on Tuesday flatly disowned a legal notice served to his Additional Director General (ADG) Zafar Ahmed Qureshi by PML-Q despite that FIA has its own legal wing to handle the issue. Talking to this scribe on telephone, the FIA boss said that it was none of his business to defend his 'subordinate over the legal notice served on him by the PML-Q in relation to the investigation into the National Insurance Company Limited (NILC) scam. When the DG was pressed that how could the agency keep itself away from the legal notice as Zafar Qureshi is working as ADG FIA at Lahore, he replied surprisingly that Qureshi had been directly appointed on the directives of Supreme Court. He also said that this scribe should better contact Zafar Qureshi, as it was the matter between Qureshi and PML-Q. PML-Q on Monday had served legal notice to Zafar Qureshi asking for Rs 50 million as a token compensation for disrupting the party and its leadership due 'to his intentional mala fide act and for misquoting the record of the court regarding the NICL scam. The legal notice not only held Zafar Qureshi responsible for the false involvement of Moonis Elahi in the NICL corruption scandal but also accused him for misguiding the media and the public at large by arranging publication of a false news item stating that Moonis Elahi had been declared a proclaimed offender. Zafar Qureshi could not be contacted for comments despite repeated attempts by this scribe; however, an official of FIA working at its Lahore Regional Office wishing not to be named said that Qureshi would reply the legal notice early. However, independent observers are of the view that FIA should stand by Zafar Qureshi at this moment as he is the ADG FIA as well as the agency had a lot of resources including its Law Branch to counter such cases. They further said that if FIA did not do this, it would demoralize the officials of the agency who always used to investigate mega corruption scams. However, the DG FIA is not ready to stand by Zafar Qureshi in this case as the sources revealed that pressure was being exerted on Qureshi by telling him that he was alone while facing damages notice of Rs 50 million. FIA has its own Law Branch with the Director Law as its head as well as it has also hired private lawyers in many cases like Benazir assassination case and Mumbai attacks. The intentions of the Federal Government could be clearly observed from the statement of Federal Law Minister Babar Awan who, on last Sunday had said in Lahore that FIA was wrongly implicating Moonis Elahi, the son of former Chief Minister Punjab, Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, in the NICL scam.
