ISLAMABAD - The National Assembly Standing Committee on Government Assurances has protested against continuous absence of Law Minister Dr Babar Awan from its meetings besides deciding to move privilege motion against him. Taking a strong notice of the continuous absence of the law minister from meetings, members of the committee on Tuesday decided to formally write letters, once again, to the Prime Minister and the NA Speaker urging them to take notice of the non-serious attitude of the minister resulting in the delay of the work of the committee. Committee Chairman Mahmood Hayat Khan Tochi observed that the committee had already written letters to the PM and speaker in this regard but to no avail. The committee will once again write against the non-serious attitude and if we will not be entertained this time a privilege motion against the law minister will be moved. Member of the committee MNA Abdul Ghafoor Chaudhry expressed his annoyance over the attitude of the law minister saying, This committee is becoming ineffective owing to the continuous absence of the law minister from its meetings. He also suggested that why not this committee was issuing arrest warrants of the minister by using its powers. On the occasion, MNA Raza Hayat Harraj elaborating the importance of the committee in parliamentary system said this committee was the mother of all the committees. He said that one committee meeting cost Rs1 million to the national exchequer. On this Abdul Ghafoor Chaudhry suggested to deduct the said amount from the pay of law minister. He also observed that if the law minister continued with same non-serious attitude and the PM would not intervene into the issue then they would think to dissolve this committee. The members of committee said how the committee can work in the absence of responsible persons of the quarters concerned and demanded that the proceedings be suspended.
