ISLAMABAD - PML-N Chief Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday participated in the protest launched by various unions of journalists against the killing of Saleem Shahzad here in the city outside the parliament house. Nawaz termed the murder of veteran journalist as assassination of the constitution of Pakistan, journalists community and the dreams of nation for free media and real democracy. Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists, National Press Club Islamabad, Rawalpindii Islamabad Union of Journalists and other unions also participated in the protest. While expressing solidarity with the journalists community, Nawaz said he and his party would stand by the journalists community until the killers of Saleem Shahzad were brought to justice. We will keep protesting unconditionally until the justice is done in the murder case, he added. Nawaz said our nation had entered into a new era. Patterns and ways had been adopted to torture persons belonging to various segments of the society for speaking the truth, however, now the time had changed and the nation would not tolerate cruelties and injustice any more, he said. He was optimistic while saying: The nation wants to know who are behind the brutal killing of Saleem Shahzad and also creating hurdles in carrying out an independent inquiry. Referring to disastrous incidents of Abbottabad operation, Kharotabad incident, PNS Mehran attack and Rangers shooting of a young boy, he said: Where were the hidden forces? Was it not a deliberate negligence on their part? The PML-N chief lamented Pakistan Navy Chief Noman Bashirs statement that the PNS Mehran attack was not a security lapse. The nation could not afford such a response, he said, adding enough was enough as they were fighting to save and protect Pakistan and defeat was not an option anymore. Raja Zafarul Haq, Ehsan Iqbal, Abdul Qadir Baloch, Hanif Abbasi, Shakeel Awan, Ch Tariq Fazal, Sardar Mehtab Kahan, Azam Swati, Waseem Akhtar, Abbaz Rizvi, PTI members, Iqbal Haider, Rashid A Rizvi, Munir A Malik and representatives of civil societies also participated in the protest. MNAs and senators from different parties demanded arrest of Saleem Shahzads killers. The protest was peaceful as the police facilitated the journalists and provided them space at Constitution Avenue heading from the foreign office to PTV. The protest will end at 3:00 pm today (Thursday). The representatives of elected bodied of journalists demanded of Chief Justice of Pakistan to take suo moto about the brutal killing Saleem Shahzad.
