LAHORE Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has directed that arrangements should be finalised for the repair of embankments and spurs in view of the threat of possible flood. He also warned that no negligence would be tolerated in this regard. He directed Secretary Irrigation to remain personally in the field for this. He was presiding over a meeting to review protective measures against the threat of flood at CMs Secretariat here on Wednesday. Minister Agriculture Ahmed Ali Aulakh, Members Punjab Assembly, Senior Member Board of Revenue, Secretaries of Home, Agriculture, Law, Irrigation, Communication and Works departments, Commissioners of Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur and Sargodha were also present on the occasion. The CM said flood had caused large scale damage last year and Punjab government took an active part in the relief and rehabilitation of the affectees. He said construction work of model villages was in full swing and over Rs 1.5 billion donated to the CMs Flood Relief Fund was being utilised for this purpose. He directed that divisional and district administrations should be fully mobilised to cope with the threat of flood and the departments concerned should remain alert to deal with any untoward situation. He said repair and fortification of embankments and spurs was of vital importance, and the Irrigation Department would be provided maximum funds for this purpose, and the Department should finalise arrangements against flood with the consultation of elected representatives of the districts concerned and Senior Member Board of Revenue should also monitor these arrangements. He issued instructions for the formation of committees at the local level for monitoring the repair work of embankments and spurs as well as ensuring proper utilisation of funds and maintaining a high standard of work. He instructed that the on-going repair work of embankments should be completed expeditiously. Encroachments in the riverbeds hinder the flow of water and a comprehensive strategy should be devised for their removal, and presented before the cabinet meeting for its approval. It should also be ensured that riverbeds are not encroached upon in future, he directed the concerned, while issuing instructions for presenting him a report after identifying encroachments in the riverbeds and pond areas of barrages. Earlier, Secretary Irrigation Irfan Elahi gave a detailed briefing regarding repair work of embankments and spurs and the arrangements against flood. He said repair work of embankments and spurs was in full swing after conducting a survey and this process had been completed at most of the places. He also informed about the measures taken for improvement of the arrangements in the light of the report of the Flood Commission.
