ISLAMABAD Some two million people are likely to get affected by heavy floods this year while six million people may suffer in case of worst situation, said National Disaster Management Authority Chairman Dr Zafar Qadir on Wednesday during a press conference at PM Secretariat. Due to useful measures minimum effect of floods is expected in the country as last year over 20 million were affected due to flash floods, Qadir said. This year around 10 per cent decrease in rains is expected which will be around 124 millimeter, he added. To a question, he said all necessary measures had been taken on provincial and district levels and early warning systems were activated in all the provinces to meet any emergency. The NDMA is ready to help the PDMA in case of any emergency situation, he added. To another question, he said the district administration would inform the NDMA at the earliest. Earlier, the NDMA arranged the fifth pre-monsoon coordination and preparatory meeting at the PM Secretariat. This meeting by the NDMA was a pre-emptive initiative to update contingency plan through consultative process with special emphasis on assessment of preparedness, response and recovery capabilities of all the stakeholders, government agencies and line departments. Chairman NDMA Dr Zafar Qadir chaired the meeting while heads of government agencies/line departments, representatives of the armed forces and UN agencies attended the meeting.
