The tragedy of Kasur where a Christian couple was lynched and burnt to death by a mob is undoubtedly an eye opener to the fact that blasphemy charges are being misused and leading to vicious crimes. It is observed that these charges are often based on personal whim, twisted and often miss-reported. Moreover, the recent incident also indicates state’s failure to provide reasonable security to its minorities and stresses the urgent need to repeal or change this law. However, the government’s response in this regard is appreciable. Both PM and CM Punjab have expressed assertively that the perpetrators will be brought to justice, and have offered compensations as well. It is hoped that the good words would be followed by concrete actions.
