ISLAMABAD -   The Working Group of ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) met here yesterday to review the arrangements for intra-party elections scheduled for October 18 in which the party councillors from all over the four provinces, AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan would elect the party’s office-bearers.

Chaired by Advisor to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, who is chairman of the Working Group, the meeting expressed satisfaction over the preparations for these elections which, according to sources, will greatly be influenced by the party leadership and role of the party councillors in such matters is usually ceremonial.

Chairman of election commission, set up for these polls, Ch Jaffar Iqbal had already announced the schedule for these elections, which will be held in Convention Centre Islamabad where the voting, if required, would continue for the whole day. In most of the cases, like elections for the top slot, no one would even file nomination papers against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif who would surely be elected unopposed.

The other main slots would also be managed through consensus and the party leadership would be given the powers to pick the right person for the right job.

Party sources informed that meetings of the provincial general councils will also be convened soon to fill in the vacant slots of provincial office-bearers of the party following the party elections at the federal level.

In Punjab most likely Hamza Shahbaz Sharif would be replacing his father Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif as provincial party head while in Khyber Pakhtunkhawa Amir Muqam and Pir Sabir Shah are the strong contenders for the top slot in the province.

In Balochistan, Chief Minister Sardar Sanaullah Zehri would be retaining the provincial presidentship of the party while in Sindh the party would have to pick either Ismail Rahoo or Nehal Hashmi.
