Karachi - Pakistan People’s Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will lead Salam Shuhuda rally here on Sunday to pay homage to those killed in Karsaz tragedy.

Over 150 people had perished at Karsaz when former premier Benazir Bhutto was being escorted home in a procession on her return to Pakistan on Oct 18, 2007.

The party has also announced a schedule to observe the ninth death anniversary of the slain party workers with three days of rallies and Quran Khawanis. According to the schedule, a huge ‘Salam Shuhda’ rally will start from Bilawal House and lead to Karsaz today on October 16. On 17th and on 18th Quran Khawani will be held in every district headquarters. 

The rally would start from Bilawal House, and after passing through Boat Basin, Mai Kalachi, MT Khan Road, ICI Bridge, Lee Market, Napier Road, Numaish Chowrangi, Shahra-e-Quaideen, would later culminate at Karsaz where the blast had occurred in 2007.

The party’s senior leadership, including the party chairman, would address the activists who would from every nook and corner of the province.

Other high-profile leaders who would attend the rally include Sherry Rahman, opposition leader in National Assembly Khursheed Ahmed Shah, Raja Pervez Ashraf, Qamar Zaman Kaira, Yousuf Raza Gillani and others. 

In pursuance of the Sunday’s rally, the party has set up various camps in the city to welcome and guide those coming not only from the city but also from other parts of the province.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto visited on Saturday one such camp at Bilawal Chowrangi and said that the PPP rally would be historic. He said that the main power behind PPP was the power of people.

PPP Senator Saeed Ghani also said that no security or law-enforcing agency had been informed about any threat to the PPP chairman and other leaders so far, but since it was on record that the PPP leaders were always on the hit list, the party had taken drastic measures for security along with police.

“A group of workers loyal to the PPP chairman would keep the PPP Chairman and leaders in a security circle as first line of defence,” he added.

In order to prevent any congestion, impediment or gridlock in the way of the rally, it has been decided that only two of six districts would be part of the rally from the very start while the floats from the remaining four districts would join the rally from different points already marked. He informed that PPP Chairman would speak to the participants of the Salaam Shuhda Rally at least four times on different locations during the process of the rally and would deliver his final speech at the monument of martyrs of Karsaz Tragedy.

Meanwhile, Former Chief Minister Sindh Syed Qaim Ali Shah also inaugurated a camp of People’s Lawyers Association at Shahra e Faisal.  He said that the PPP had always given sacrifices for the democratic system in the country and their leadership had always been on the forefront in this regard.

He said that Bilawal Bhutto was the leader of the party and everyone would stand behind him to struggle for the democratic system in the country.
