KARACHI – Sindh Law and Prison Minister Ayaz Soomro on Monday said that four prisons including Central Prison Karachi, Landhi, Hyderabad and Sukkar jails had been declared sensitive after attack by Taliban on Bannu prison in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa two days ago.

Talking to a group of mediamen in his office, he said that security had been tightened in all the 27 jails in Sindh, besides four jails including Karachi Central prison, Landhi Jail, Hyderabad and Sukkur Prison have been declared sensitive after Bannu incident of jailbreak.

Soomro pointed out that a huge number of 1,000 dangerous prisoners present in four jails of the province, which have been declared sensitive, where additional force of Rangers and FC have been deployed.

It may be noted that nearly 400 prisoners including militants escaped early Sunday from a jail in Bannu of KP province after an attack by militant Taliban with guns, grenades and rockets.

Soomro said that security and vigilance of prisoners had been increased in jails. He said that Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah had provided a sum of Rs1 billion for reforms in jails, which include facilities and computerisation of records of prisoners.

To a question, he said that local government elections were not possible until demarcation of electoral constituencies on population basis, adding that talks are in progress with ally parties in this regard.

Regarding announcement of merger of Mumtaz Bhutto’s SNF in Nawaz Sharif’s PML-N, he said that it would be betrayal with Sindh if Mumtaz Bhutto merged his party in PML-N. He alleged that Nawaz Sharif’s party is the supporter of Kalabagh Dam and people of Sindh will never forget Mr Bhutto over his possible announcement of merging his party.

Soomro said that Nawaz Sharif has no base in Sindh, so he wanted support of feudal lords like Mumtaz Bhutto and Liaquat Jatoi, who had always been rejected by the people of Sindh. He said that Nawaz Sharif’s party would not get even single seat on next election in Sindh.
