ISLAMABAD – Students of various universities on Monday demonstrated artistic skills cultural, dress and painting show organised under Spring Splash 2012, an Inter-University Competition at Preston University.

Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) Managing Director, Mir Shahjahan Khetran was the chief guest at the award distribution ceremony of the Cultural Dress and Painting and Sketching competitions.

A large number of universities of Islamabad, Kohat, Peshawar and Lahore are participating in the ongoing weeklong inter-university competitions that include Naat, Sports, Bilingual Debate, Cultural Dress, Comedy Skits, Painting, Sketching and Singing competitions. The event aims at giving exposure to the students in terms of extra-curricular activities and building up the confidence of the students to prepare them to face the challenges of today’s world with confidence and courage.

Cultural Dress Competition, the highlight of the day was thoroughly applauded by the audience. The students of the participating universities elegantly displayed dresses of the four provinces of Pakistan. Everyone present inordinately applauded the presentations on the occasion. In the competition, the team of Preston University, Islamabad, won first position. Second position was awarded to the team of Islamia College University, Peshawar. Foundation University, Rawalpindi stood third in the competition.

In the Painting Competition, Ayesha Abbas from Quaid-e-Azam University grabbed the first position. Sadia Anwar of Preston University, Islamabad was awarded second position while Safia Shaheen, from Foundation University, Rawalpindi was placed in the third position.

In Sketching Competition, Arusha Javed, from Preston University, Islamabad, grabbed the first position. Amna Athar from Foundation University, Rawalpindi was awarded second position. Third position in the competition went to Faiza Nadeem from Preston University, Islamabad. Mir Shahjahan Khetran, in his brief address on the occasion, highly appreciated the performances of the students who participated in these competitions.

He particularly lauded the excellent performance of the students who excelled in the respective competitions. He congratulated the Chancellor of Preston University, Dr Abdul Basit for organising such festivities, which provide not only its own students but also the students of other universities of the country a unique opportunity to unleash their talents in extracurricular activities.

In the Naat competition, Samam Mumtaz of Arid Agriculture University, Rawalpindi beat her competitors and secured first position. Second position in this competition was awarded to Zarmeena Yasmeen from the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Lahore. Afshan Shaheen from the International Islamic University, Islamabad was awarded third position.

Dr Qari Muhammad Younus who was chief guest on the occasion distributed prizes among the position holders. Chancellor Preston University, Dr Abdul Basit was also present on the occasion. He congratulated the students of the winning universities in the ‘Cultural Dress’ and Painting/Sketching competitions. On the occasion, he expressed the hope that the participating universities would continue to sponsor their students to compete in such events, organised by Preston University, in future also.
