Al-Qaeda member gets life in jail



An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Lahore awarded life term to an Al Qaeda member, Khurram Shahzad, with an order to confiscate his entire property

The verdict came on a charge sheet submitted by the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD), Lahore.

The convict, a resident of Rawalpindi, was arrested by the CTD from Lorry Ara on May 13 with a recovery of a hand-grenade and 10kg of explosive material from him. Shahzad also confessed that he had planted a bomb in the washroom of a bus stand that was recovered by the CTD officials.

The charge sheet and prosecution revealed that the convict belonged to Al Qaeda and was involved in transporting arms, ammunition and explosives to carry out attacks across the country.

The CTD presented the suspect before the ATC after completion of charge-sheet. After a cross- examination of witnesses and trial, ATC Judge Muzaffar Husain Shah announced the verdict.

Muggy weather to stay



Plains of the country including Lahore remained in the grip of muggy weather on Sunday with experts predicting the prevailing conditions to persist during the next couple of days.

Weather remained hot and humid in most parts of the country. However rain-thundershower occurred at isolated places in Malakand, Kohat, DI Khan, Faisalabad, Bahawalpur, Lahore, DG Khan, Sahiwal, Sibbi divisions, Kashmir, upper FATA and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Abundance of sunshine caused increase in the mercury level with high humidity making the weather sultry, causing people to sweat profusely throughout the day.

Dalbandin remained the hottest place in the country where mercury rose as high as 43 degree Celsius. Maximum temperature in Nokkundi was recorded 42C, Turbat, Sibbi and Sukkur 41C.

Maximum and minimum temperature in Lahore was recorded 36C and 25C respectively. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded 67 percent.

According to the experts, seasonal low lies over west Baluchistan and adjoining areas with its trough extending northeastwards. Weak monsoon currents are penetrating into northeastern parts of the country. A shallow westerly wave is also prevailing over upper parts of the country and likely to move northeastwards in next 12 to 18 hours.

The local meteorological department has forecast mainly hot and humid weather for most parts of the country during the next couple of days. However rain thundershower is expected at isolated places in Hazara, Peshawar, Malakand, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Lahore and Gujranwala divisions, Islamabad, upper FATA and Kashmir.

Godown gutted



Foam and other items worth million of rupees were reduced to ashes when a fire broke out in a godown of foam manufacturing company at Gulberg on Sunday.

On information, rescue 1122 vehicles reached the spot and succeeded to controlled the fire after hectic efforts. However, no loss of life was reported while the cause was stated to be a short circuit.
