LAHORE - Hundreds of lawyers held demonstration to condemn publication of blasphemous caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Charlie Hebdo and other European magazines in the name of ‘freedom of expression’ on Friday.

The lawyers, however, did not give any strike call but they held demonstrations, showing love and respect to the Holy Prophet (PBUH). They termed the publication of blasphemous material as terrorism and demanded the European Union and European States to stop this terrorism.

The Lahore Bar Association (LBA) held general house meeting at Aiwan-e-Adl where a number of lawyers gave sermons on step of French and other European country’s weekly and daily newspapers.

The LBA adopted a resolution about sending ‘references’ to various embassies of European States and United Nation Organization to play their role in order to stop blasphemy of Allah’s messengers which was causing misunderstandings among the members of the international community and leading the world towards clash of civilizations.

“We are Muslims and we respect all messengers of God in the world,” said a lawyer while addressing LBA General House meeting held at Aiwan-e-Adl. He said journalism must be done but it did not mean that any thing which was against the peace and harmony of the global village could be published or circulated in the name of journalism or freedom of expression.

LBA newly elected president Ishtiaq A Khan condemned European magazines, especially Charlie Hebdo for publishing blasphemous images and caricatures of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) saying that the matter must be taken up to the embassy of France in Pakistan.

He said resolution did nothing in the past when a film was made against the Holy Prophet (PBUH). He said he filed a petition against film in the LHC. However, the house adopted unanimously a resolution regarding sending references to French Embassy and other embassies of European states and to UNO.

He further said a true follower and lover of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) cannot bear any kind of blasphemy of his great Prophet who gave respect to human beings.

Hafiz Akif said that Western powers wanted to make relation of Muslims with their Prophet (PBUH) weak but it would never be.

A partial strike was observed at the Lahore High Court but at the lower courts, lawyers did not appear in the courts and as a result, thousands of cases were adjourned to other dates.
