LAHORE Pakistans junior tennis sensation Samir Iftikhar caused a major upset by beating British national junior under-18 champion Joe Mills in a nail-biting match in his maiden appearance in the elite G1 ITF tournament Samir, currently a top ITF junior World Ranking Circuit player, won the match 6-0, 6-7, 6-3 in the first round of ITF G1 Mediterranee Avenir Open being held at Club Olympica Casablanca, Morocco, from June 15 to 20. Later, pairing with the British junior champion, he won a marathon doubles cliff hanger against Martell Beuziti of Spain and Tamimount of Morocco with scores 6-2, 3-6, 10-8 in super tiebreak to reach last 16. The match was played on the red clay center and proved to be a thriller when Samir completely outplayed the Briton in the first set by winning 6-0. He broke the top British junior player thrice and held all his serves with aces and powerful ground strokes which left Mills hapless. However, the second set turned out to be nail biting affair as Mills gallantly fought back and engaged Samir in long base line rallies as both the players held serves till six games each when Mills earned two mini breaks with magnificent down-the-line passing shots to clinch the second set 7/6. The third set witnessed baseline battle between both players and held serves till three games each when Samir broke the Brit in the 7th game with beautiful cross court passing shot at 30/40 to lead 5/3 and closed the match with powerful serves at 6/3 to set an . He will now meet 15th Seed German Chiristian Plattes in the next round.
