Ushna enters Egypt ITF quarterfinals

LAHORE – National champion and WTA world ranked tennis player Ushna Suhail, partnering with Akila James (USA), has defeated Sophie Gertis (Belgium) and Aids Kalimullina (Russia) in pre-quarterfinals to reach the Egypt ITF Tennis Tournament quarterfinals at Sharm el Sheikh. According to Ushna’s father Suhail Khawaja, Ushna and partner displayed aggressive net game and steady baseline shots to thump their rivals. The Pak-US pair didn’t allow their opponents to settle down and won the encounter 6-2, 6-2. “My opponents have an impressive ITF record but we played better tennis, therefore, we registered an inspiring victory. We are quite satisfied with our performance and hopeful of doing well in the matches to come,” Ushna said in a message received here Wednesday.–Staff Reporter


Four matches decided in Nasir Butt Cricket

LAHORE - Four matches were decided as the postponed Nasir Mahmood Butt T20 Cricket Tournament resumes here at different venues of the city. Universal Club, New Ittefaq Club, Jallo Gymkhana and Garhi Shahu Gymkhana emerged as victorious in their respective matches. In the first match played at the Race Course ground, Universal Club registered a thrilling 10-run victory over Apollo Club. At the same venue, the second match saw New Ittefaq Club outclassing Iqbal Town Gymkhana by 7 wickets. In the third match played here at the Jallo Park ground, Jallo Gymkhana outlasted Dharampura Gymkhana by 6 wickets. While in the fourth and last match of the day also played at Jallo Park ground, Garhi Shahu Gymkhana played well against Muslim Gymkhana and beat their opponents by 4 runs in a thrilling encounter.–Staff Reporter



City Gym in Veterans Cup main round

LAHORE - City Gymkhana Senior Tuesday qualified for the main round after winning their second respective match in the Aftab Qarshi Veterans Cricket Cup qualifying round here at the Stags cricket ground. City Gymkhana captain won the toss and opted to bat first. They posted 146 runs on the board for the loss of nine wickets in 20 overs. Aurangzeb Khan batted brilliantly and slammed 27 runs while M Afzal contributed significant 25 and Khalid Butt 20 to make their total reasonable. Tahir Mahboob bowled well to clinch three wickets while Mohsin Javed took two. In reply, Muridke Tigers were all out for 136 in 19 overs. M Yaqoob gathered 24 runs and M Nasir 21. Pakistan win Asia snooker team event

ISLAMABAD – Babar Masih and former world champ M Asif teamed up to lift the Asia snooker team event played at multi-sports Complex in Fujairah, UAE held by ACBS. Talking to The Nation, PBSA president Alamgir Shaikh said: “It was great performance by Pakistani pair, who, against all the odds, first managed to beat mighty Indians 3-2 in the semifinals and then stunned super Iranians 3-1 in the final. “In recognition of their services, PBSA executive committee announced a cash award of Rs 200,000 for the team champions, as Babar and Asif will receive Rs 100,000 each, while Rs 50,000 will be handed to M Bilal, who participated in the 6 Red event and reached the semifinals to earn bronze medal. “I was with the team and was feeling proud to see a great number of Pakistanis in UAE coming to witness and support Pakistani players. I hope IPC Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada will announce cash awards for Pakistani snooker players on their brilliant performance in the prestigious international event, which will certainly boost the morale of the players,” he added.–Staff Reporter
