Islamabad-Academic Staff Association (ASA) of Islamic International University (IIUI) yesterday held a protest against the professor for harassing a female staff member and announced strike in the faculty till the issue is resolved.

Talking to The Nation, a representative of ASA said the accused professor has a history of making a scene with the colleagues while many staff members are witnesses of the incident.

“The committee’s proceeding was held nearly two months before and no decision has been taken so far,” he said.

According to him the association has no trust on the committee and it has decided to hold strike in the faculty of Basic and Applied Sciences.

“We demand from the university administration to probe the incident in 10 days otherwise the protest will spread,” he said.

The protest was also joined by some students raising the protestors’ toll to dozens. They were holding banners in support of female staff members.

Meanwhile, the accused professor from the Department of Environmental Sciences rejecting the allegations and said that facts of the related incident are being twisted and he had done nothing wrong.

According to him, the teacher which has filed the complaint against him was not present on the day of the incident.

“I have sent Rs 3 million defamation court notice to the people who have accused me in the false case,” he said.

He also said that ASA is pressurizing the university administration for its own interest.

Responding to the protest, University President Dr Yusuf Darwesh said that a 3-member committee comprising Prof Dr Jaleel, Prof Dr Muneer and Prof Dr Amna has been set to probe the issue.

However, he rejected the demand of protestors to ban the entry of professor in university allegedly involved in harassment of the female staff member.

Sources also informed The Nation that personal difference between dean of basic and applied sciences faculty and the environmental sciences teacher has led to this dispute.

“Both in past also have been involved of accusing each other on various issues,” sources said.

The administration has also asked the students to stay away from the issues of faculty members.

The teacher facing the harassment charges, was accused that he ‘misbehaved and loudly shouted’ at a female staff member in front of other teachers.
