PESHAWAR - The United States based Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan (HIA) (Hekmatyar) stalwart Daud Abidi has confirmed holding meetings with high-ranking American officials and handing over a letter of Engineer Hekmatyar addressed to US President Barack Obama. Yes, I held three meetings with high ranking US authorities, Daud Abidi remarked in a telephonic conversation with TheNation on Friday. He said that all such meetings were held on behalf of Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan headed by Engineer Gulbadin Hekmatyar. Belonging to Qandahar province of Afghanistan Daud Abidi has been residing in California, United States since long. He made his best for reconciliation between Hizb-e-Islami (Hekmatyar) and Taliban Supreme leader Mullah Mohammad Omar Akhund in 1994 but failed due to strict attitude of Taliban leadership. Through his talks and Engineer Hekmatyars letter, the Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan is insisting on (1) early pullout of foreign troops from Afghanistan, (2) establishment of a neutral interim govt and (3) holding of impartial, free and fair elections. So far I am satisfied with such talks, Daud Abidi remarked. However, he was reluctant to give further details in this respect. He said that at the moment, the Hizbe Islami stalwarts were engaged in dialogues and contacts with all those countries, which were having some influence on the affairs of Afghanistan. Daudi Abidi further said, We have offered two other options if the US announces a schedule regarding foreign troops repatriation from Afghanistan. The options, he said, included combating narcotics production and trafficking and repatriation of all alleged militants from Afghanistan to their native countries. In response to a question, Daud Abidi confirmed his good links with Taliban leaders engaged in resistance against the US led allied troops. In this respect, he praised in particular the former Afghan Minister Maulvi Jalal-ud-Din Haqqani and his son Siraj-ud-Din Haqqani. To a question, he said that most of Afghans had realized the ground realities and they would not repeat mistakes of indulging into infighting and hostilities with each other. It may be mentioned that the one time strong Hizbe Islami Afghanistan is divided into four groups. The three groups headed by Khalid Rashid, Abdul Hadi Arghandiwal and Engineer Waheed Ullah Sabawoon are part of President Hamid Karzai government. After release of Dr Ghairat Baheer son-in-law of Engineer Hekmatyar, the HIA (Hekmatyar) has reactivated its circles all over the world. Most of them are engaged in contacts with the high-ranking authorities. Besides Daud Abidi, Ustad Qareeb-ur-Rehman Saeed residing in Norway is engaged in similar efforts in the European world. Meanwhile, Gulbadin Hekmatyars Hizb-e-Islami Afghanistan has initiated efforts for mustering support from internal and external circles in favour of its nominee, Qutab-Ud-Din Hilal, for the slot of the President in the upcoming elections. Belonging to Pakteya province of Afghanistan, Qutab-Ud-Din Hilal, a soft-spoken person, is very popular among the people of Afghanistan. Soon after 9/11, he held several meetings with President Hamid Karzai and other high-ranking officials in Kabul. Some highly reliable sources informed TheNation that Hizb-e-Islami chief Engineer Gulbadin Hekmatyar has directed almost all his aides to seek support for Qutab-Ud-Din Hilal. In this respect, Hekmatyar has also revived contacts with his wartime colleagues who are now divided into rulers and opposition in the existing set up of Afghanistan. It may be mentioned that earlier Dr Ghairat Baheer was considered as a HIA nominee for the Presidential office. Dr Ghairat is son-in-law of Engineer Gulbadin Hekmatyar and nephew of Engineer Qutab-Ud-Din Hilal. Ghairat Baheer after his release from Bagram Jail in May 2008 stayed in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia before flying to the United Kingdom.
