ISLAMABAD - The government will announce today trade policy for the financial year 2008-09 with an estimated exports target of $21.6 billion and to contain imports at around $37.6 billion, it was learnt here on Thursday. Minister for Commerce Ahmad Mukhtar will present the trade policy at 7pm in the evening through PTV and Radio Pakistan. Ministry of Commerce will seek the final approval of the proposed draft policy from the federal cabinet, which will also meet at 10am under the chairmanship of PM Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani at the PM House. The Commerce Minister along with his team of the ministry will further explain the main features of the policy in the post-trade policy press conference likely tomorrow. The sources said that the government was left with few options to provide financial incentives for some of the under pressure sectors including textiles. However, more focus of the proposed policy is to control 'unwanted' imports to minimize pressure on the balance of payments, as the national economy is not in a shape to absorb further shocks.
