ISLAMABAD (APP) - Construction work on the highest roller compacted concrete dam in the world Diamer Bhasha would start next month and would be completed by 2016. Sources of the Ministry of Water and Power told APP that the process of land acquisition has started and after its completion it would help generating 4,500 MW electricity. The government of Gilgit-Baltistan has started land acquisition for the project and foreign funding for the project has been arranged for the purpose, the sources added. The project, on its completion, will store 6.4 million acres feet (MAF) of water for agriculture besides generating 4500 MW of low-cost hydel electricity. The sources further informed that the proposed dam which would be constructed on the River Indus would be height of 272 meters spillway with fourteen gates each 11.5 mx 16.24 m. The government has a plan to construct 32 small and medium dams in all the provinces and work on some them has already started. The sources said the Chinese government had granted soft loan of $ 700 million for the construction of these dams.
