KARACHI - Despite red alert by the Rangers, dozens of people were killed and over 50 others got injured in political violence in Karachi, bringing the death toll to 36 in two days of violence. According to some sources, the violent incidents started taking place as ANP announced to boycott the by-poll for the vacant constituency of Sindh Assembly, PS-94. Following the announcement of Black Day by the ANP, the violent incidents started taking place in some areas, killing 11 people till late Saturday night. The continued violent incidents raised the death toll to 34 till Sunday evening. When contacted, City Police Chief, Fayyaz Leghari informed TheNation that as many as 21 people had been killed in the current spell of violence while police had detained some 20 miscreants from different areas of the city. Police Chief said that no major incident took place in the constituency PS-94 and bye-election was held in a peaceful manner. He, however, added that miscreants tried to disrupt the polling process in some polling stations but the law enforcers managed to control the situation. City remained paralysed and law enforcement agencies (LEA) have failed to maintain the situation. According to details, three bodies were found in gunny bags from Shah Waliullah Road and Lee Market areas of Lyari on Sunday. Two of them were killed after kidnapping and one headless body also found from Lee Market, Noor Elahi Road near Saeed Bakery. The identity of the victims was not ascertained till filing of this report. According to report, all of them were daily wagers. They were kidnapped from Garden and Kharadar areas and killed by Lyari gangsters. A man was gunned down in Kharadar area was identified as Syed Shahzad, 27, while another unknown man, 25, was shot dead at Ghazi Town. It has also been reported that around eight to ten people have also been abducted by Lyari gangsters, police sources said. In another violent incident, unidentified armed men opened indiscriminate firing on a minibus at Khyber Chowk near Kabaria Market in the precincts of Pirabad Police Station while an unknown passer by was shot dead near Qasba More. A man identified as Badsha Khan was gunned down at Mansehra Colony, Sharafi Goth Police Station while another, identified as Anees Ahmed, 32, was shot dead near Safora Chowk, Mubina Town Police Station. Another firing incident took place in Baber Market area of Landhi, where the gunmen shot dead Niaz Muhammad and Samad Khan at a carpet shop, and another at a tea stall. A bus bearing registration no PE-9985 was also attacked in which two people were killed and four others got injured. Separately, a biker identified as Afrooz Iqbal, 28, was gunned down when he reached Hazara Moor Chowk on motorbike. A rickshaw driver was shot dead in target killing near Hussain Abad in the limits of Azizabad Police Station. Identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained. Two youth were shot dead in Timber Market within the limits of Eidgah Police Station. Another man was gunned down in Gulshan Sikanderabad within the limits of Jackson Police Station. The identity of the victim is yet to be ascertained. In yet another incident, two brothers who were workers of MQM were gunned down while they were sitting outside their home in the jurisdiction of Malir City Police Station. The incidents of target killings and violence created panic across the city.
